Hello and Welcome!

TOURNA-MIX is finally here, and I’m thrilled to have you as a competitor!  Thanks for being here!  Quickly, I’d like to ask each and every one of you to PLEASE reach out to me with any feedback you may have on the site.  As the designer, I understand exactly how TOURNA-MIX works……but you may not.  If you ever feel lost, or have any questions or suggestions, kindly reach out and help me make this website as user friendly as possible.  I will surely be making many changes to the site over the next few months and your insight is much appreciated.

I thought it would be fitting to feature one of my own original songs for the first contest – it’s called “There To Be Found”.  I wrote this song shortly after realizing that I COULD in fact learn how to mix and produce my own music.  For over a decade, I never thought this was possible.  It was a very exciting and liberating epiphany, and in just one sitting I banged out an entire song (love it when that happens!).  Of course, my intention wasn’t to write a song about learning the art of audio production – that would be lame; rather, I wrote what I think is an empowering song about overcoming adversity, and realizing that the answers we seek are in fact “there to be found”.  Quick shoutout to my good friend Andrew Johnston for helping me iron out some of the lyrics.

Flash forward five years (five intensive years of obsessive mixing) and I finally DID produce this song.  In a way it was sort of a test run….my first major stab at producing a song from home.  Could it be done?  Could I do it?  Well, I think I did!

Now truthfully, I didn’t really do this alone.  Far from it!  In fact, I hired a lot of online session players to play parts I couldn’t handle alone: drums, bass, keys…..even horns.  In the end, very little of this was actually recorded at my apartment; however, I was still able to organize everything on my own terms, all without leaving home 🙂  I learned a ton from the process, and feel proud of the results….but man, did I ever make a lot of mistakes along the way!

I’m very excited to hear how you all approach this tune.  It’s a bit of a beast!  I threw everything but the kitchen sink at it, and although I consider it a strong production overall, it won’t necessarily be an easy mix for you.  I struggled big time to get a mix I was happy with.  There are LOTS of instruments,  and you’ll have to be very crafty to make it all fit. My advice is to pay special attention the most important elements, otherwise you’ll get swamped by all the moving parts!

I’ve said enough.  I hope you all enjoy month #1 of TOURNA-MIX, and I look forward to growing together as mixers for years to come.  THANK YOU!

April 15th – 21st: Voting Round 1.  Simply log in to your account and pick your top three favourite mixes.  Deadline for voting is April 21st at 10pm (EST)…if you fail to vote you will be eliminated!

April 22nd – 28th: Voting Round 2.  Simply log into your account and pick your top three favourite mixes.  Deadline for voting is April 28th at 10pm (EST).  Remember, by voting in Round 2 you will automatically be entered into a draw to win 50 USD!  Please vote!

April 29th – 3oth:  Results revealed!!  Good luck!
