First, thanks to everyone who submitted a mix for my production of King’s Highway!  It was really neat to hear what you all did with it.  I think the winner was correctly chosen in the public vote – tthorpe you were also my top pick!  You did a really great job on my vocal (best vocal mix hands down) and overall your mix just had great balance, clarity and vibe.  I found your kick and snare a tad distracting (I’d love to hear them tucked in just a bit more)  and your mix felt a bit sub heavy to me, but I must say you did a great job one this song!  My 2nd choice was JTC’s mix, which in many ways came the closest to how I imagined this production should sound.  It felt the most similar to how I approached my mix I guess you could say.   I think maybe this mix was a bit lacking in bass guitar (or perhaps low end in general) but the midrange was really nice and I really like where the vocal was sitting.   Another great mix from one of our most dangerous mixers!  3rd place was tough….IMO it was kind of a tie between kaldlyd and michaeltn86 .  I think kaldlyd had excellent balances, but there was a lack of midrange detail to my ear.    michaeltn86’s mix had the midrange I think the song needed but wasn’t quite as solid as kaldlyd’s otherwise .  If I absolutely had to choose it would go to kaldlyd for 3rd place, but honourable mention to michaeltn86 felt necessary.

MIX CONTEST #2

So, in case you didn’t know, Tom Petty is one of my all time songwriting heroes.  I’ve just always vibed with his songs and production style.  So, I decided to try my hand at covering one of his (IMO) most underrated songs, “King’s Highway”.  I played most of the parts and eventually decided to hire an online session drummer to give me a more realistic drum performance.  I also recruited a close friend to play some 12 string parts.  I learned so much from producing this song and I hope you all enjoy it!
