HOUSE PICK

Maaaaan this was a tough one!  The production was so mix ready that the quality of these mixes was really high!  In the end I chose:

#1 jgrandmon

I’m not a hip hop guy, but to my ear this mix captured the raw, upfront sound that hip hop is famous for, but still had a nice ambience to glue everthing.  I felt like these guys were rapping right in my lap.  Low end was big, snare popped nicely and the vocals sat really well.  I don’t know, it just sounded like the song to me if that makes sense.  My ears were getting everything I wanted and nothing that they didn’t.  Killer mix!

#2 Guillaume Bonaventure

Really dug this mix.  Guillaume always has a knack for getting that big modern polished sound and this was no exception.  Compared to jgrandmon I found the midrange in this mix just a bit lacking somehow.  Like it didn’t cut through enough, a tad too smooth?   I also found the snare felt a bit subdued as if maybe it was too limited or something.  BUT, super balanced mix, nicely gelled, and sounding great to me!

I’m not surprised this mix won.  It was great in so many ways.  My only issue was the FX just felt too over the top for this song.  Having said that they were also SUPER WELL done! lol.  It’s like the FX were great, but I found compared to my top two choices this mix just didn’t have that bold, upfront dry sound that hip hop often seems to have.  Just a bit too dreamy and tripped out.  But man, otherwise this mix was sweet!!  Nice one!

MIX CONTEST # 2

T-M member Fabian Ramos has provided us with an awesome latino hip hop song called “Pandemia”. Fabian is a super talented producer/mixer from Bogota, Colombia who works with many artists in a wide variety of styles.  Hip hop has been sorrily lacking here at TOURNA-MIX and I for one am super stoked to have the chance to work on this stellar production.  Let’s go!
