PRODUCER/HOUSE PICK

This was so cool guys.  I really enjoyed listening to your mixes!  As one of the songwriters (and main producer) I was obviously biased to favour mixes that maybe felt similar to mine in some ways.  It wasn’t easy to choose, especially for the top spot.  In the end I thought James E had the best mix!  My only complaint was the double and triple vocals in the chorus weren’t audible enough to my ear.  I want them to be louder in order to create that modern wide gang vocal sound.  Otherwise it just felt right to me!  TomImmon was the obvious 2nd choice (actually he was the obvious 1st choice apparently!).  Great mix!  I could easily have chosen this mix as my top pick as it was really strong start to finish.  I can’t quite explain why I ended up choosing it as 2nd – just a gut thing I guess.   Sagalegin took 3rd spot for me.  At first this mix felt a bit too subdued to me, but there was just something about it’s smooth  tonality and balance that caught my attention.  It had a really warm full sound which I love.  Also the lead vocal was exceptional!!!  Great clarity and focus in this mix.  Well done!

MIX CONTEST # 2

About a year ago, a local Ottawa artist named Joey Vinegar contacted me with the hopes getting some help producing a song he called “Cookie Cutter Country”.  It was basically a spoof of a new country song.  I immediately liked the concept behind the chorus but the rest of the song was kind of a disaster LOL.  When I shared my rates with Joey (which I can assure you are very reasonable) he declined to work with me as he didn’t have the necessary funds.  8 months passed….and I still had that chorus in my head!!!  I decided to reach back out to Joey and told him I’d do the song for free if he gave me half the songwriters share – AND if he let me rewrite it on many levels.  Joey agreed.

From there I recruited my songwriting partner Andrew Johnston and we went on a quest to try and turn Cookie Cutter Country into a legit new country song in the spirit of Florida Georgia Line.  As some of you know, Andrew and I have been trying to break into the new country market for the last little while and we both felt this song had potential.  3 months later we’d fully rewritten and produced the track – which eventually became “Raise a cup”.  We have just started pitching the song and hope it’ll land somewhere some day.   Now, you get to try mixing it!  Have fun!
