“I didn’t really hear a bad mix in the twelve with the exception of one which was an immediate no after the first 4 bars, but not because I thought it was bad, just that it didn’t hit me well.  At least half these mixes rivalled Tim’s original mix in my view and he’s a world class mixer. I kept coming back to mix 2 because it seemed to have more deliberate creative choices and ultimately more of a stylistic imprint that I felt took the tune into more of an indie rock sounding direction, which I liked as a valid alternative (as opposed to trying to match Tim’s which is also a valid way of going about things too obviously).”

MIX CONTEST # 1

In this contest you all get the chance to dust off a song called “Nothing Left” that was recorded back in 2014.  The song was written by one of my close friends, Amanda Mabro – some of you may remember her from our June 2020 contest featuring her song “Beating Heart”.  Amanda recently tracked down all the raw tracks from the EP this song appears on and I thought it would be neat for all of you to take a crack at mixing one of them.  This production will test not only your mixing skills but probably also your editing skills.  There were no timing edits or vocal tuning done to this song (I did some in my mix but my edits are not baked into the tracks provided) so depending on the sound you’re after you may need to spend some time editing which is an essential skill to have as a mixer!  Whether you choose to meticulously edit everything to perfection, or leave in some of the human feel is totally up to you.  Have fun!
