LATE 90’S BRIT POP

Hello and welcome to May’s song, “Million Miles Apart”, by Irish singer-songwriter (and TOURNA-MIX member) Andrew Byrne. I’ve had the pleasure of mixing many of Andrew’s songs over the years and this is by far my favourite. The chorus is truly memorable and the arrangement is TIGHT. I had a blast mixing this song and I can’t wait to hear what you all come up with!

A word from Andrew:

Million miles apart was written in 2015 and 2016, The process as in all my songs is one of building the song on a basic skeleton. For example on this song I had wrote the song on acoustic guitar and had a melody with the words, I then determined what the rhythm section was gonna do, so I wrote the bass and drums, from then on it was just a case of recording different parts that I thought would work and living with them for a bit while continuing to record and write other parts. A lot of stuff ended up getting binned and even into the mixing process I decided not to use 2 tracks. The 2 tracks were the Verse lead guitar and the Acoustic guitar 2. The only track to last from start to finish of the recording process was the vocal track which I had split into verse and chorus, although in hindsight they could probably have been recorded again.

Here is a low down on what was what.

Drums were from SSD4, I used midi grooves from ez drummer2 that I imported into the daw and modified to what I really wanted but the sounds are SSD4

Bass Guitar is a DI through my presonus studio channel.

Acoustic guitar was recorded through the studio channel with an audio technica 2035.

Vocals were recorded through the presonus studio channel with a Rode NT2A.

The synths, pads, organs and arps, all come from Dimension pro vsti.

There are also a couple of risers and impacts that I used from some sample packs that I have.

My vision for the song was to fit in with what you could hear in the mid to late 90’s from the britop era but the synths would be the standout parts that wouldn’t neccesarily fit into that genre. One song that always comes to mind for me when listening to the song now is the song ‘Little by Little’ form Oasis’ 4th Album ‘Standing on the shoulder of giants’
